The magic duo of Ford Mustang and Carroll Shelby bring open-air excitement to the road for the 2008 model year as the Ford Shelby GT returns with a new convertible body style and a new standard color combination. Like all Shelby Mustang models, production will be limited to assure exclusivity for collectors. The 2008 Shelby GT will be available in coupe and convertible from select Ford dealers beginning in August 2007.

The 2008 Ford Shelby GT convertible will be formally introduced to Shelby and Ford enthusiasts at the Mid-America Ford Performance and Shelby Meet, which opens today in Tulsa, Okla.

“The Shelby GT was engineered for people that put performance first,” said Carroll Shelby. “Working with Ford Racing, we created this Shelby to be an everyday driver that’s tuned for fun at the track. Those who value a well-balanced package will appreciate it. Those who don’t will be left behind staring at its tailpipes.”

In 2007, Ford Division, Carroll Shelby and Ford Racing joined forces to create a retail version of The Hertz Corporation Shelby GT-H coupe called the Shelby GT. Fewer than 6,000 total 2007 Shelby GTs were built and were only available in Performance White or Black.

For 2008, the highly-coveted Shelby GT is available in a new paint combination of Vista Blue with Silver stripes and the choice of two body styles, coupe or convertible.

“The Mustang convertible is the number one selling convertible in the U.S.,” states Robert Parker, Ford Division Car Marketing Manager. “Since t he Mustang program never stands still, we wanted to continue offering consumers what they want, and they told us it was a Ford Mustang Shelby GT convertible. ”

Shelby GT models begin life as a specially-equipped Mustang GT assembled at the AutoAlliance International assembly plant in Flat Rock, Mich. The cars are then shipped to the Shelby Automobiles facility in Las Vegas for transformation before delivery to Ford dealerships nationwide.

“The birth of the Ford Shelby GT was so well received last year, especially by young enthusiasts, that we brought the car back for the 2008 model year,” said Amy Boylan, President of Shelby Automobiles. “The enormous response to the Shelby GT-H convertible convinced us to offer a drop top Shelby GT. And we had so many requests for blue that we decided to make it our signature color in 2008.”
Every Shelby GT is built to perform and is the result of extensive development. Aerodynamics were key to sculpting t he powerful, unique front fascia with aggressive lower air dam. The hood scoop comes directly from the famed Shelby Cobra roadster while unique side scoops are positioned just before the rear wheel arches. The rear fascia frames dual exhaust tips and a Shelby badge is on the trunk lid.

“The partnership between Ford Racing and Shelby demonstrates our ability to work together to deliver some of the most exciting Mustang’s ever built,” said Jamie Allison, manager of the Ford Racing Performance Group. “Ford Racing has a full line of performance parts for Mustang enthusiasts. The Shelby GT convertible is another example of how working together, Shelby and Ford Racing are developing, producing and delivering niche performance Mustangs directly to the customer.”

Under the hood, the engine is upgraded with a Ford Racing Power Upgrade Package to increase output of the 4.6-liter V-8 to 319 horsepower and 330 lb.-ft. of torque. A high-flow exhaust system with X-pipe crossover offers better power delivery and a throaty V-8 exhaust note. Shelby GT comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission featuring a Hurst short-throw shifter for precise shift action. A five-speed automatic transmission is optional.

The balanced package includes a Ford Racing Handling Pack with special-tuned dampers, unique sway bars and a 3.55:1 ratio rear axle assembly for improved off-the-line acceleration. The overall ride height was dropped to reduce body roll while a front strut-tower brace adds additional strength to the chassis structure.

The 2008 models will sport 18-inch polished wheels with high-performance P235/50ZR18 BF Goodrich gForce tires to maximize the upgrades. Like all Mustang convertibles, each drop top will have supplemental bracing to give the car additional stiffness and the Shelby team will add a stylish light bar.

“The Shelby GT is for drivers,” says Boylan. “We enhanced the motor, the chassis and other bits to make it a fun, balanced car that is equally at home on the street or track. It’s easy to drive, very fast and offers great value for the price.”

Approximately 2,300 2008 Shelby GT coupes and convertibles will be built, available with manual or automatic transmission. Each car will feature an authentication plate on the center dashboard, as well as a matching tag under the hood for documentation in a forthcoming registry. Shelby Automobiles production is scheduled to begin in August 2007.

The 2007 Shelby Mustang Cobra cranks out over 450 horsepower, some, including Shelby, say as high as 475 horsepower. In spite of producing awesome power and torque, it actually has more than twice the fuel economy rating and 300 times less emissions than its’ legendary predecessors. Four valves per cylinder and a double overhead cam provide ideal proficiency in air and fuel ignition. This beast is equipped with Ford’s 5.4-liter modular V-8 supercharged at 8.5 pounds per square inch of boost. The Ford Mustang is one of the most renowned muscle autos that was ever created. Throughout its long history Ford has made numerous variations of it and produced special editions that have sold for hundreds of dollars. The whole construct and design of the muscle car started in 1962 with the existence of the very first generation Mustang.

The first generation Mustang was the beginning of a new era for Ford and for the muscle cars. The model was first debuted in 1962 as a two-seater vehicle that was equipped with a V4 mid-engine. In October of 1963 the Mustang II was debuted and fashioned as a four-seater auto with a front engine. This went on sale just six months afterwards. The customers enjoyed the look that the vehicle had to provide and it soon rivaled that of the Corvette.

The first-gen Mustang was built with the design of a unibody construction that was put over a wheelbase that was 108 inches and had the length of 181.6 inches. Ford was pressured to utilize similar pieces from the Ford Falcon so they would be able to save money. These pieces included the rear suspension and double wishbone coil spring.

The front part of the car was longer then usual and projected farther into the back giving the car a longer hood and a lower roof. The design was used to save Ford money – but in the end it was what made it such a great car and made it unique. Along with this design the muscle car was outfitted with the classic running horse placed on the grille and the side scallops on the side of the car.

It was outfitted with a 2.8 liter OHV straight six engine that could push out 101 horsepower. Over time it was upgraded to the 3.3 liter before it stopped at the 4.7 liter – which had the ability to thrust out 220 HP. The three speed manual transmission came standard with each engine that it was equipped with.

It did not take long for the first-gen Mustang to make an impact on customers. Throughout Ford Mustang history it has only improved and even now is very common among both the older and younger generation.

The birth of the Ford Mustang also saw the birth of the phrase ‘pony car’ which is a term used to describe an American car that is both sporty and affordable. Most Pony cars are epitomized by their inexpensiveness, small compact size and over powered engines.

In the late 1950′s Ford saw sales of its 2 seat Thunderbird decline and in 1958 introduced a new larger 4 seater version which after its introduction in 1958 was incredibly successful.

The competition between Ford and Chevrolet has always been fierce with both large companies trying to appeal to similar markets. This lead to the introduction of the Chevrlet Corvair in 1960 that was the catalyst that forced Ford to create the Thunderbird’s successor which was called the Futura and Futura Sprint. The competition lead the other manufacturer to follow Ford’s example with Plymouth introducing the Valient Signet and Dodge creating the Dart GT and it wasn’t long before Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Buick joined the competition.

All of these cars were a commercial success but some top auto executives including Ford’s Lee Iacocca believe that there was a bigger market that they could capture. They saw that there was a niche market of younger car buys with a disposable income looking to purchase affordable cars with a more sporty image.

This lead to the creation of the Ford Mustang in 1964 which proved to be an enormous success. Ford initially forecasted sales of just a mear 100, 000 but orders totalled 22,000 in the first day alone. By the end of that year sales had reached a staggering 618,812 units.

The Ford Mustang became the car that all the other manufacturers wanted to emulate and lead to the new phrase ‘pony car’ being adopted. The term was first used by Dennis Shattuck who was the editor at Car Life magazine around that time and created it based on the equestrian sounding Ford Mustang.

The Ford Mustang is one of Ford’s oldest running names together with the F-Series and the Falcon which is still in production in Australia. Over the years there have been 5 generations of Mustang with the 1970′s seeing a diversion from the lightweight original Mustang urging fans of the early 1964 design to force Ford to go back to its 1960′s roots.

First Generation

The first generation of Mustang was created under the watchful gaze of Ford’s Lee Iacocca and chief engineer Donald N. Frey and took 18 months. The original prototype saw the car having a mid-mounted V4 engine and only 2 seats but this was abandoned in favour of a 4 seater 2+2 design due to the low sales figures of the Ford Thunderbird. The 2+2 design was believed to have been chosen due to the success of cars like the Jaguar E-Type.

The new body design was created by Joe Oros which produced a winning design in a competition introduced by Iacocca.

“I told the team that I wanted the car to appeal to women, but I wanted men to desire it, too. I wanted a Ferrari-like front end, the motif centered on the front – something heavy-looking like a Maserati, but, please, not a trident – and I wanted air intakes on the side to cool the rear brakes. I said it should be as sporty as possible and look like it was related to European design.” –Oros

In order to keep the costs of development to a minimum the car was based on components from cars already in production such as the Ford Fairline and Ford Falcon.

Second Generation

The second generation of the Mustang was fuelled by the energy crisis in 1973 which caused the large petrol thirsty earlier cars to fall out of favour due to the rise in fuel costs.

The new smaller Mustang II was released in 1973 and Ford goal was to compete against the small Japanese imports such as Toyota Celica. However the final car was much heavier than its early counterpart adversely affecting the performance.

Third Generation

In 1979 the third generation of Mustang was introduced relying heavily on the Japanese market for its design. The car was designed to be more accommodating to 4-passengers, the trunk size was increased and the engine bay was enlarged to make maintenance easier.

Fourth Generation
